Patience
In the New Testament, there are two Greek words that are translated as “patience”.
Hupomonē means “a remaining under,” as when one bears up under a burden. It refers to steadfastness in difficult circumstances.
Makrothumia, which is used in Galatians 5:22, is a compound formed by makros (“long”) and thumos (“passion” or “temper”).
“Patience” in Galatians 5:22 literally means “long temper,” in the sense of “the ability to hold one’s temper for a long time.”
A patient individual can bear significant pain and suffering without complaining. She remains calm and waits for God to bring comfort and address wrongdoing.
True patience is a fruit of the Spirit, so we can only obtain it through the power and work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
An impatient person tends to react quickly to frustration, often displaying irritability or restlessness when things do not happen as quickly or smoothly as they would like. God does not want us to live in irritation; He wants us to live in peace—a peace that surpasses all understanding to be exact.
Patience in singleness
Waiting to be in a relationship seems to be one of the hardest area of our lives in which to exercise patience.
I understand why—love is fascinating. Even scientifically, we are wired for empathy, wired for touch, and wired for love. Positive relationships are key to our health and happiness. Unhealthy relationships can negatively impact our health in many ways, including an increased risk of infection due to chronic stress and even a decline in energy levels. 🤯
We were created to experience healthy, loving relationships.
Genesis 2:18:
“The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’”
So how can one be patient while waiting for their own healthy, loving relationship?
They can practice active patience. Active patience is a proactive approach to waiting, where one engages in purposeful and meaningful activities while trusting God with the outcome.
We will go in depth on this topic next week. Stay tuned!
